If you're considering getting chickens to secure your food supply or get started homesteading, I highly recommend signing your children up for an Outschool class. Before the chicks arrived, they took Outschool classes to prepare. Learning to care for chicks as part of our homeschooling and homesteading lifestyle has been a great science lesson for the girls. If you don't want to spend two weeks on the same topic, you could combine days, or just pick and choose enough days to fill one week. I've provided two different chicken workbooks for you to choose from. I also recommend that you do a few pages of seatwork each day. On each day, you will find a suggested book to read, something to make, and an activity. In the schedule below, I've provided enough material for two weeks of chicken fun. Or maybe you're all dreaming of the day you can have your own flock. Maybe all you or your children have ever done is pet chickens at the local petting zoo. Then use these resources to re-enforce learning and practice math and language skills. Or maybe you can take a field trip to a nearby farm. This is a fun way to include some academic learning through the summer. It’s an illness.If you wake up early in the morning and one of the first things you do is head outside to count chickens, gather eggs, and let them all out to wander, you and your children are going to really enjoy our brand new chicken preschool theme.
I’m at about thirty right now, and I can attest to the extra work – be sure you’re ready to take that on for another pretty face! (Having said that, I have dreams of moving to a farm where I can have 100 birds! Sigh.
So I am pretty choosy when it comes to acquiring more birds. I have no more space for another coop – when my slots are filled, I’m done, unless time or illness creates more openings in the flock. If you fill your coop up with birds that were more conveniently available, then you won’t have room to get the ones you really want. My favorite excuse is, ” they’re only bantams – they don’t count!” (And I raise large fowl – do I NEED these little birds? Of course not, but they’re so darn cute!) I always advise people to wait, although it sure is hard to do that sometimes, to get the breeds they really love. Great advice! Although I am more careful than some other flock owners I’ve met, I, too, have succumbed to chicken math.
